Google Translate Takes Off in Ten More Languages

April 18, 2015

Google Translate extends its already extensive reach by adding ten more languages - by popular demand - to its online translation service. The GT newbies are: Chichewa, Malagasy and Sotho - all spoken in Africa; Malaysian, Malayalam, Myanmar, Sinhalese and Sundanese in South and Southeast Asia and Kazakh, Tajik and Uzbek in Central Asia.

Chichewa has 12 million speakers in Malawi, while Malagasy and Sesotho are spoken in Madagascar and South Africa respectively.

Malaysian is the national language of Malaysia, and is related to Indonesian. Myanmar is more commonly known as Burmese, while Sinhalese is the most widely spoken language in Sri Lanka. Sundanese is spoken on Java. Kazakh and Uzbek are related to Turkish, while Tajik is closely related to Farsi (or Persian).

Many of the newbies are written in Latin script, e.g. Chichewa and Malaysian. but others have their own scripts, e.g.

Malayalam is മലയാളം

Sinhalese is සිංහල

Myanmar is မြန်မာစာ

Kazakh and Tajik use Cyrillic script: Қазақ тілі and Тоҷикӣ.

So you can use GT's automatic translation function, but can you read it?

Happy translating!
