How many languages do people speak in Europe?

January 06, 2015

People in Europe speak many languages, e.g. English in Britain, French in France - but some EU nations are more multilingual than others. If you look at the map, you'll see that people living in smaller countries tend to speak more languages. People in little Luxembourg, for instance, squeezed in between Belgium, France and Germany, need to communicate and work with people in countries around them, so they learn their languages. Netherlands and Slovenia also do very well in the multilingual stakes. Hungary, and English-speaking Britain and Ireland don't fare so well..... Wouldn't it be nice if everyone was a multilingual as the Luxembourgers?

This fascinating map is based on the results of an EU wide language survey - it has been put together and analysed in easy detail at this link
