When this brood of chickens at Carrum Primary School hatches, they will be more likely to chirp “guten tag” than “hello”.
Students at the school have used the process of hatching the eggs as a way of learning German, with great results, the school’s garden teacher Elise Ioviero said. Ms Ioviero said each year students at the school raised a brood of chooks, and the sessions they care for the eggs were run in German. “It’s been a really successful program,” she said. “The whole thing is conducted in German, because we find that when the children are really engaged in an activity they [are] able to learn more effectively. “They already seem to have learned so much more of the language than normal.” Ms Ioviero said the chickens were expected to hatch soon and would eventually provide eggs for the school’s Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. “We’re wondering if they might actually come out of the eggs clucking in a German accent,” she said.
